Peoria Police Chief Art Miller was the guest speaker at the Aug. 21 meeting of the Peoria North Rotary Club.
 
Appointed to the post on Sept. 4, 2018, Chief Miller shared his background with the club, as well as some of the priorities he has set for the department.
 
He came to Peoria after serving as chief of police for the South Pasadena (California) Police Department. Prior to that, he retired as the rank of captain with the Los Angeles Police Department.
 
As chief in South Pasadena, he implemented the department's community relations program which complemented the Neighborhood Watch program, established the bicycle patrol unit, implemented the predictive policing program which reduced Part I crimes by 40%, worked closely with the school district to create the School Resource Officer program, established the Homeless Outreach program and partnered with the fire department to establish a CERT program.
 
Chief Miller has a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in organizational leadership. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, U.S. Army Leadership program and the California Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training, Sherman Block Leadership Institute.
 
Chief Miller is the recipient of the LAPD's three highest awards for bravery: The Medal of Valor, the Police Medal and the Police Star.
 
He and his wife, Linda, live in Peoria and have an adult son.
